Thorens Td 280 Mk Iv Test

  1. And so over the summer I got a TD280 MKIV from a local gentleman very cheaply ($twenty), and I expected many issues. He explained at the fourth dimension that the tonearm wires were a problem, but hadn't delved into it much himself.

After several months, I finally found some time for myself and pulled it out and went through it tonight.
Hither are some bug I observed:

    • The original detachable 16v AC power supply was not present. Instead, a generic 16v Air-conditioning wall wart was hardwired within the plinth with WIRE Basics to the leads to the PCB. The fuse was bypassed in so doing. Clear packaging tape was securing much of the wiring to the plinth.
    • The linkage from the tonearm enhance/lower knob was entirely missing, along with the actuating/rotating bits.
    • The lift platform nether the tonearm was missing and showed damage on the remaining dominate.
    • The tonearm lock machinery was cleaved.
    • There was some kind of attempt to outsmart the Thorens grounding pattern for the tonearm shaft. This involved using a strong spring wire, wrapping it in coils around the lowest part of the shaft, then routing information technology through the same passage equally the fine tonearm wires, and then soldering it to the same terminal that receives the static ground for the bearing housing. The wire used was remarkably strong and of a spring type. My pet theory was that this strong wire ripped the tonearm wires from their designated solder pads
    • Too, the tonearm wiring was AFU at the attachment point for the phono cables.
    • In that location were a few fire marks under the plinth. Surface marks just, but strange to meet them in places where no electronics (wire paths, excursion boards) were.

    The adept:
    • I tested it after a careful safety check, and the motor runs great.
    • Plinth is in pretty good shape
    • Hinges present, cover is scratched up just not croaky
    • TP-35 tonearm arm in good shape, and somehow throughout all the other harm mentioned even retains its original anti-skate nylon line and weight.

Anyway, I had been planning on fixing it up, simply after the investigation tonight I remember I'll be parting it out unless anyone has any compelling reason non to. I experience bad because I like Thorens and wanted to see what a lower model could offer, only time is not available for me.
I have some other projects I need to consummate: PL-630, TD-121, as well as a Marantz Model Xx.

Thank you for reading all that.

  3. I wish i knew more about the TD-280. Have you checked analogdept, link below, to get a experience for where that automobile fits in the Thorens hierarchy? If it's a later model with lesser value, or parts are hard to come past, then departing it out might be a swell way to go. Still, if the motor is shine and quiet, and if you like to tinker, it would besides make for a project tabular array, especially if you haven't worked on them much earlier. I've got a couple of Thorens including a TD-1XX that I assembled from individual components from all over the globe. I love information technology, but information technology toll a pretty penny to buy and transport all of those parts, so I'one thousand sensitive to how expensive Thorens parts tin can be.

If you work on information technology keep united states of america posted on progress.

  4. Hello DavidTT,
The 280 was on the lower cease of the offerings. Apparently the Mark Four has many upgrades over the previous MarkI-Three. The TP35 arm was upgraded over the earlier TP28, and the platter is heavier. The interesting part is the motor command lath, which takes 16v Ac and and so resynthesizes a more accurate Air-conditioning signal from it.
The motor I think was shared on the TD320.
